Colours of a Rainbow
•Posted on November 25 2024
Have you ever looked up into the sky to see the Beautiful Rainbow? The colours of the Rainbow include the Primary Colours: Red, Yellow, Blue and between each of these Primary Colours are the Secondary Colours: Orange, Green, Purple.
As you look up to the Rainbow you will see Red next to Yellow and as these two colours blend they create the colour Orange in-between the Red and Yellow. Then you will see the Yellow next to the Blue and as these colours blend you will see the colour Green in-between the Yellow and Blue. Next, you will see Blue next to the Red and as these two colours blend they create the colour Purple between the Blue and Red. Does it make you wonder who this great Artist is that created such a beautiful Rainbow?
Now lets look at this concept through the eyes of an artist. When an artist paints skin tones for a portrait, yes they can start with the pre coloured paints they have already bought like various shades of brown, white, black, greys, purples etc.
However, you really only need just Red, Yellow and Blue to mix skin tones. Let's look at a few pages from our Children's Book Ophelia's Colourful Journey.
As you can read on the image above, all the skin tones of these beautiful children were made from just Red, Yellow & Blue. From African, Albino, Chinese, India, Filipino, European etc
By mixing just Red, Yellow & Blue in different quantities and adding a little water you can creates various shades of skin tones. Look at the images below:
By mixing Red & Yellow to make Orange and adding a little blue you can make a lovely mid tone Brown. And by adding water to this brown a little at a time, the shade of brown becomes lighter and lighter.
Let's look at another shade of Brown.
By adding a little more Blue to the first Brown, the Brown becomes darker. Then adding water to the dark brown it creates lighter paler shades.

To help children learn about colours we have created a range of Organic T-shirts with fun colourful designs. All inspired by my own 3yr old Grandson, who's favourite colour is Blue & Purple.
